Abstract: This thesis discusses the practical role of time in the lives of the citizens of ancient Athens. The theory proposed is that, from the fifth to the first centuries B. C., methods of and devices for marking time intervals were of growing importance to them. The literary and archaeological evidence for timekeeping in ancient Athens is presented and the conclusion reached is that the Athenian populace apparently became more conscious of the advantages of exploiting time in its daily activities.
